1. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King was a revolutionary figure in the American Civil Rights movement. Dr. King's influence is unabated to this day and will continue to impact the world. While Dr. King is most well-known for his fight for racial justice, he is less known for his advocacy on economic justice issues and held more "radical" views than the mainstream American public would accept even today. Dr. King's life teaches the value of tenacity in the face of adversity and the power to make widespread and consequential change through civic participation.

2. It depends.

Many issues in the past were viewed in a much different context than today, and it's essential to keep this in mind when analyzing and interpreting history. It does not make positions on these issues any more justified or reasonable but instead serves as a critical ingredient for historical interpretation. However, viewing the past through the lens of today can be beneficial in understanding how specific events have impacted the course of history and give us a better understanding of how we got to where we are, what we can do, and where we may be going. What worked and what didn't work? How is this different than then? These are relevant questions when considering using today's lens in a historical context.
