Thanks for sharing this quote! As a close political follower in terms of both my duty as a citizen and my experiences in academia, I have learned this the hard way. We can proactively change our thinking process so as to not get frustrated about people and politicians that we can't change.

Our efforts are better directed towards efforts to get out the vote and making our voices heard despite the dissent or opposition. It's still important to have these arguments and to be passionate about them, but you can't put your eggs all in one basket and expect to change the opinion or behavior of a particular person or politician. Ironically, speaking up about issues, being passionate, and advocating for change will cause some people to change their mind, but it is not something you should rely or even count on.

As hard as it may be, don't anchor your sanity to the whims of individuals in the general public or demagogues. You will be sorely disappointed.
